You know the feeling.
It’s 2:30 in the afternoon. The sky goes dark in about four minutes. The thunder rolls in. And suddenly your entire plan for the day is gone.
This is just Tuesday in Orlando from June through September. The storms are fast, and you need a plan B that doesn’t involve sitting in a theater for two hours watching a movie nobody really wanted to see anyway.
Here’s where locals actually go!
Andretti Indoor Karting & Games
This is the one that absorbs an entire afternoon without anyone noticing.
Andretti Indoor Karting & Games is a 100,000+ square foot facility featuring high-speed electric Superkarts on a road course style multi-level track, a state-of-the-art arcade, a ropes course with curved rail zipline, two-level laser tag, racing simulators, boutique bowling, an XD dark ride motion theater, and immersive multiplayer virtual reality experiences.
The go-karts are the headline, real speed, real racing, not the bumper car version you remember from childhood. But there’s enough going on inside that you could spend three or four hours without touching the karts at all.
The Andretti Grill serves scratch American food and the SkyBar carries craft beer, cocktails, and selections from the Andretti Winery. The bar overlooks the track, which is genuinely a great place to sit.
Good for adults. Good for families. Good for groups where half the people want to race and the other half want to eat.
ICEBAR Orlando
This one is legitimately unlike anything else in the city.
ICEBAR Orlando is the world’s largest permanent bar made entirely of ice, including the walls, bar, and glasses. Guests receive a parka-style jacket at the entrance. Once sufficiently frozen, you can head to the adjacent Fire Lounge to warm up with themed cocktails and dancing. The Fire Lounge has no cover charge.
The temperature inside the ICEBAR stays below freezing year-round. On a day when the heat index outside is 110 degrees and a storm just rolled in, that contrast is deeply satisfying.
It’s adults-focused, novelty-driven, and the kind of thing you do once and always remember. The Fire Lounge keeps the evening going after you’ve defrosted.
SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium
One of the more underrated spots on this list for families.
SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium at ICON Park allows visitors to explore the underwater world through a variety of exhibits, particularly great for younger kids who want something engaging and completely indoors.
The 360-degree ocean tunnel is the standout, you walk through while fish swim overhead and around you. It’s calm, cool, and educational in the best way. Doesn’t feel like a theme park. Feels like a real aquarium experience without the full-day commitment.
Madame Tussauds is in the same building if you want to extend the visit.
Arcade Monsters
This one matters especially if you live in East Orlando and don’t want to drive to I-Drive.
Arcade Monsters in Oviedo and Lake Mary spans 16,000 square feet of arcade gaming, a restaurant, bar, merchandise store, and anime art exhibit space. It’s locally owned and fun for all ages. A newer International Drive location has also opened.
The Oviedo location is genuinely good! Locally owned, well-maintained, and close enough to Waterford Lakes, Avalon Park, and the UCF corridor that you don’t have to commit to a big drive in the middle of a storm.
Orlando Science Center
Orlando Science Center is a fully indoor museum featuring hands-on exhibits covering science, technology, the human body, space, and more. with interactive demonstrations for all ages.
It’s been significantly updated in recent years. The exhibits on the human body and space exploration are genuinely impressive. This is one of the few places on this list that works equally well for a 6-year-old and a 36-year-old. Budget two to three hours and go hungry, the café is great!
Escapology
If you haven’t done an escape room in a while, the format has gotten much better.
Escapology on International Drive offers high-stakes escape games with immersive themes and time-pressure tension, one of the more polished escape room experiences on I-Drive for groups looking for something genuinely challenging.
Escape rooms are the perfect rainy afternoon activity for a group, one to two hours, competitive, collaborative, and you leave having actually done something rather than just watched something. Book ahead on weekends. Walk-ins work better on weekdays.
iFLY Orlando
For the family that needs to burn energy and a movie isn’t going to cut it.
iFLY Orlando lets you experience what indoor skydiving feels like inside a state-of-the-art wind tunnel, with expert instructors guiding first-timers through every step. No prior experience necessary.
It’s legitimately exhilarating. Kids who have never been have zero frame of reference for what to expect, which makes the reaction on their first float something worth seeing. Adults feel it too. This is the move when the storm has been going for three hours and everyone is getting restless.
Dezerland Park Orlando
One of the most underused spots for locals who haven’t discovered it yet.
Dezerland Park bills itself as one of Florida’s largest indoor attractions at over 800,000 square feet. It includes Putting Edge, an 18-hole indoor mini-golf course lit entirely by black lights, along with trampolines, go-karts, laser tag, a massive vintage car collection, and more.
The scale is genuinely surprising. You walk in expecting a typical entertainment venue and find something much larger. The black light mini golf alone is worth a trip.
Semoran Skateway
This one is for locals who want to do something a little different.
Semoran Skateway has been entertaining Central Florida locals for decades, consistently updating its offerings. Adults Night on Sundays runs for just $10 plus $3 skate rental.
Roller skating on a rainy Sunday afternoon with good music playing is a deeply underrated activity. If you haven’t been since you were a kid, the nostalgia alone makes it worth it.
A Note for Parents
If the storm hits and you need something specifically for younger kids, the Orange County Library System locations are air conditioned, free, and running programming all summer long through July. Free book programs, science shows, and activities that keep kids genuinely engaged for a couple of hours.

One More Thing
The places on this list are scattered across Orlando (I-Drive, downtown, Oviedo, Casselberry). One of the things I’ve always appreciated about living in East Orlando is that you have real access to all of it without being in the middle of tourist traffic every day.
